8 Meaningful Ways to Empower, Uplift & Support Women

International Women’s Day offers an opportunity to honor the remarkable contributions of women throughout history and acknowledge the challenges they continue to face today. It’s a time to reflect on the progress made and take action toward creating a more inclusive, supportive world for women. As a Canadian women-owned business, we understand firsthand the importance of creating space for women to lead, innovate, and thrive.

Here are eight meaningful ways to empower, uplift, and support women not only on March 8th but every day:

1. Support Women-Owned Businesses

One of the most effective ways to uplift women is by supporting women-owned businesses. Whether it’s a small boutique, an online shop, or a local service, your patronage helps women entrepreneurs thrive. You can even make it a goal to exclusively shop from women-owned businesses throughout the month of March!

Here are a few women-owned brands in various industries that we admire:

2. Donate to Women’s Charities and Causes

Consider donating to organizations that champion women’s health, education, empowerment, and equality. Charities supporting women’s rights, shelters, and mentorship programs are making a difference every day. Supporting initiatives like the Canadian Association for Girls in Science helps open doors for future innovators, giving young women the tools to succeed in fields where they’re often underrepresented. Even a small contribution can have a lasting impact, helping to create opportunities and pave the way for a more inclusive future.

3. Host a “Women Who Inspire Me” Event

Organize an event where women share stories of the women who have inspired them. It could be an informal gathering with friends or a larger community event. The idea is to create a space where women’s experiences, achievements, and influences are celebrated in a personal and meaningful way.

4. Support Women Through Mentorship or Pro-Bono Services

Mentorship is a powerful gift. Guide, teach, and inspire the next generation of women leaders through professional, academic, or personal support. Offer your skills — whether legal advice, career coaching, or workshops — to empower women in need. Providing free services helps build confidence and creates lasting impact through opportunities that otherwise may not be possible.

5. Write Notes of Appreciation to Women in Your Life

Take a few moments to send personal messages of appreciation to the women who have inspired and supported you — whether it’s a mother, a teacher, a colleague, or a friend. A heartfelt message can make a big difference and remind the women around you how much they mean.

6. Learn About Women’s History or Feminist Movements

Set aside time to learn about how women’s rights have evolved around the world. Reading books, watching documentaries, or listening to podcasts can provide an opportunity for global understanding and solidarity.

7. Document Women’s Stories

Start a project to collect and document the stories of the women in your life and community— stories that carry wisdom, resilience, and strength. Whether these women are from history or those still walking among us, their experiences are invaluable and deserve to be heard. Consider creating a blog, photo series, or podcast to honor their voices and share their journeys. These stories often go unnoticed, yet they shape the fabric of our communities in profound ways.

8. Commit to Ongoing Advocacy

Make International Women’s Day the starting point for an ongoing commitment to gender equality. Whether it’s advocating for equal pay, better maternity leave, or creating a more inclusive environment at work, consistent advocacy for women’s rights is a long-term investment in change. Find a cause you care about and become an active ally, whether through petitions, volunteering, or raising awareness on social media.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let’s remember that empowering women and supporting gender equality is a year-round commitment. Through mentorship, advocating for equality, and amplifying women’s voices, each action contributes to lasting change. By honoring women every day, we create a world where they can thrive, lead, and be celebrated!
