Why Use Handmade Paper? Handcrafted paper stands apart for its texture, appearance and process. Unlike conventional paper, which comes mass-produced in uniform sheets, this paper is crafted one sheet at a time. The process creates subtle variations in texture and finish, giving every piece a more natural, organic quality. Many makers create paper using recycled fibers like cotton or repurposed textiles, or recycled paper waste. This makes handcrafted paper a more sustainable alternative to traditional paper. How Handmade Paper is Made Preparing to make paper starts with a base pulp, often made form recycled cotton, natural fibers, or, in our case, 100% post-industrial paper waste. Makers add pigments and inclusions are added such as seeds and petals. The materials added to the base pulp determine the paper's uniqueness. The papermaker adds the pulp into a papermaking vat. They pull a mould and deckle through the pulp, drain the water from the sheet, and "couch" the wet sheet onto a pad of felts. They repeat this process until they build a stack of paper sheets and felts, then press the stack in a papermaking press to remove excess water. Finally, they remove the paper from the press and either air-dry it or use a specialized dryer system designed for handmade paper. The Deckle Edge One of the most recognizable features of handmade paper is its soft, feathered edge, known as a deckle edge. This edge forms naturally during the papermaking process when the papermaker pulls each sheet to size on a screen, rather than cut down from a larger sheet. The result is an organic, irregular border that has an artisanal feel. It forms during the papermaking process and enhances the overall look of handmade paper. Other paper manufacturers produce paper in large sheets and then cut them down to card and invitation sizes. If they want a deckle edge look, they try to mimic the effect by tearing or cutting the paper, but you can only achieve a true deckle edge when you handmake the paper to a specific size.
