Up-Cycle Craft – Back-to-School Organizers

September is a great time of year to get things organized. Kids are back to school and your schedules fill up fast with activities and commitments. For those of us with kids, now is the perfect time to establish some good organizational practices and habits. Here’s a fun up-cycle craft for them to do to help get them get excited about organization. It also doesn’t hurt to take the opportunity to teach them about recycling and reusing too.

With just a few simple items found around your house, you and the kids can make custom school and work supply organizers. And we know things are busy, so don’t worry, this craft will take under half an hour to complete. And now they won’t have an excuse that they can’t find a pen to do their homework 😉

Supplies:

  • Toilet paper rolls – however many you want for this project (we used three).
  • Decorative paper – wrapping paper (pictured above), card stock, seed paper, construction paper etc.
  • Scissors or a cutting mat, ruler and Xacto knife.
  • Adhesive – a glue gun, tape or spray glue.
  • Cardboard or 100 lb. card stock – this is to cut the bottom out of.

Instructions:

  • Gather all your supplies. Cut and arrange your toilet paper rolls how you would like them to appear for your finished product. We chose to do three different heights to suit the items we needed to organize.
  • Take your glue gun and put a thin layer around the bottom. Stick this to your cardboard. Take your scissors and trim as close to the edge as possible.
  • Measure your paper before you cut by rolling it around your roll. Leave about three inches on the top and bottom of the roll. Cut your paper to size.
  • Spray one side of your decorative paper with spray glue and roll it over your toilet paper roll. If you don’t have spray glue you can just as easily use tape to secure the paper in place.
  • Once rolled around and secure, cut half an inch slits around the top and bottom of the left over paper. This will allow you to easily fold them in without leaving creases around the edges.
  • Repeat for the rest of your rolls. Now you can decide what you choose to do. If you want to keep them separate then you are done. If you want your rolls to stay as one unit, take your glue gun and put a dot of hot glue near the bottom of your first container and stick it to your other container. Repeat for how many containers you ended up making.
  • Fill up your containers with your school or work supplies and you are done!
