Botanical PaperWorks grew from the seeds of a teacher’s desire to reduce paper waste in her classroom. The pursuit of making a difference, no matter how small, is part of our roots and continues to motivate us. Today, Botanical PaperWorks is a strong, stable, thriving company on a mission to have a positive impact on the planet and the community in which we’ve been planted.
We actively minimize our environmental impact by adopting sustainable practices, reducing our carbon footprint, conserving resources, and continuously improving how we operate.
All seed paper made at Botanical PaperWorks is made from recycled paper waste embedded with seeds that grow when the paper is planted in soil. The paper naturally breaks down in the soil, resulting in zero waste.
We believe in prioritizing inputs and packaging components that are made from recycled materials and/or can be repurposed, recycled, or composted, as well as emphasizing minimizing materials while ensuring product protection. Current practices include compact packaging, bulk shipping, recyclable outer and inner packaging, using compostable and biodegradable kraft bags, and the reuse of shipping boxes.
Botanical Paperworks has been tracking and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions since 2019. In 2024, we adopted new carbon accounting software that uses more activity-based data. As result of this change in methodology, we’ve established 2024 as our new baseline year to measure against and track progress.
We’re powered by one of the cleanest electricity systems in the world with 97% of the electricity generated from renewable hydropower. That means near-zero emissions from our electricity consumption.
Smart water practices are a priority at Botanical PaperWorks. In Winnipeg, our water comes from Shoal Lake, an important resource to all who rely on it. While there are no water shortages in our region, we’ve implemented measures to manage our water usage efficiently and recognize the issue of excess water runoff. We’ve achieved an average water usage of 1.57 liters per 12 x 18 sheet or 0.79 litres per Letter/A4 sheet of paper which is significantly lower than the industry standard of 13 litres per Letter/A4 sheet. Additionally, we’ve set water reduction targets to further minimize our footprint. By continuously reviewing performance metrics with industry standards, we identify areas for improvement and implement practices accordingly.
