{tutorial} DIY Seed Paper Flowers

With spring around the corner, what better way to celebrate than with flowers! Rather than buying flowers, we opted to make our own from seed paper. Did you know that imported flowers are often flown thousands of miles to get to you, in refrigerated airplanes, and have a huge impact on our environmental footprint?

Making seed paper flowers has two benefits: enjoying flowers to welcome in spring, and planting the paper after to enjoy wildflowers in the garden! These flowers are easy and quick to make, too.

Supplies you’ll need:

  • Colorful seed paper
  • Scissors
  • A pencil
  • Tape
  • A ruler
  • A round object to trace (approximately 16cm diameter)
  • A toothpick or skewer to help roll the paper more easily (optional)

STEP ONE: Trace and cut out your circle on your choice of seed paper.

STEP TWO: Fold the cut circle into quarters and cut slices into the non-folded edge. To shape the petals, cut tips into each of the cut sections. Unfold to reveal the full flower.

STEP THREE: Cut halfway into the circle and fold the flower around the circle to form the flower. Tape the flower to keep it’s shape.

STEP FOUR: Cut out another piece of seed paper, approximately 9 1/2 cm x 2 cm. Fold the paper in half and cut small slices into one side. Unfold and roll the paper tightly and place in the centre of the flower.

STEP FIVE: To create the stem, cut a piece of seed paper approximately 3 cm x 11 inches long and roll up the paper at an angle, using a toothpick or skewer (optional). Tape the finished end to keep its shape. Place the flower head into the open end of the stem you just made and lightly tape them together.

That’s it! Enjoy your seed paper flowers this spring and remember to plant them in the summer to enjoy wildflowers as well.
